Newborn Photography Session Checklist: Preparing for the Day

A practical guide and checklist to help parents prepare for a calm, relaxed newborn photography session.

Bringing your brand new baby to a photography studio can feel like a major milestone in itself. It is completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and anticipation. The secret to those sleepy, curled-up newborn portraits actually lies in the preparation before you even leave the house.

Here is a practical checklist to help you organise your morning and ensure a calm, relaxed experience for the whole family.

Feed Right Before You Leave

A well-fed baby is a sleepy baby. We recommend planning a full feed just before you put your little one in the car seat. If they fall asleep during the drive to the studio, that is perfect. If you live close by, you can also feed them as soon as you arrive at the space. Bring extra milk, formula, or plan for top-up breastfeeds, as babies often feed more than usual during a session.

Keep Baby Awake Beforehand

To help your baby settle into a deep sleep during the portraits, try to keep them awake for about one to two hours before the session. A warm bath, some nappy-free time, or a gentle chat can keep them alert so they are ready for a long sleep once they arrive.

Dress in Easy Layers

When dressing your baby for the trip, choose loose clothing that buttons or zips up the front. Avoid anything that needs to be pulled over their head, as this can wake a sleeping baby when we transfer them to the studio props.

Pack the Essentials

Your diaper bag should include a few extra items for the day:

  • Plenty of nappies and wipes.
  • A pacifier (even if your baby does not regularly use one, it can be helpful for brief settling between poses).
  • A change of clothes for parents (accidents happen, and the studio is kept warm to keep your baby comfortable).

Keep Your Outfits Simple

For parent and sibling portraits, opt for soft, neutral colours like cream, grey, beige, or white. Avoid busy patterns or large logos that might distract from your baby. Since the studio is warmed to keep your baby cosy in their wraps, wearing light, breathable layers is highly recommended.
