Use this checklist before baby arrives and revisit it as equipment changes. Seek individual advice for premature babies or babies with medical needs.

Sleep space

Use a firm, flat and level sleep surface designed for infant sleep.

Keep pillows, toys, bumpers and loose items out of the sleep space.

Plan a separate infant sleep space in the same room as a caregiver.

Keep baby smoke-free before and after birth.

For every sleep

Place baby on their back for every sleep.

Keep baby head and face uncovered.

Avoid overheating and choose clothing suitable for the room.

Check that the sleep space remains clear after feeds and settling.

Away from home

Check portable sleep equipment instructions and current safety requirements.

Move baby to a safe sleep space after travel rather than leaving them in a car seat.

Supervise baby in prams, carriers, bouncers and other non-sleep products.

Share the same safe sleep plan with grandparents and other carers.

Add a personal item

Useful for hospital-specific instructions, family tasks or questions.
